Sachin Tendulkar: 13 Valuable Coins that Produced a Top Cricketer in the History of Indian Cricket

A small child, just 11 years old, makes a cricket ball out of paper and plays cricket with the housekeeper who is working at home. Due to the child’s passion for cricket, his older brother decides to send him to Ramakant Achrekar, a renowned cricket coach, to learn the game.

After a few days, the coach realizes that the young child has no batting skills. He then refers the child to Dennis Lillee, a renowned fast bowling coach, to learn how to bowl.

Observing the child’s bowling, Dennis Lillee realizes that the young boy lacks the physical strength required for fast bowling. To avoid discouraging the child, Lillee writes a small note, saying,

I believe he is more suited for batting than for bowling

and once again refers the child to his previous coach.

After reading the note, the coach thinks, ‘If a renowned coach like Dennis Lillee says that this child is better suited for batting, then my failure to recognize that is my own shortcoming.’

He starts to train the child in batting once again. However, despite continuous training, the child repeatedly struggles to protect the wicket.

The coach devises a new method to teach the child how to guard the wicket and strike the ball. He removes the bails from the stumps and places a coin instead. He tells the child,

If you can stay at the wicket without getting out today, I’ll give you this coin. If you get out, the coin will go to the bowler.

The child eagerly begins to strike the ball, but within a short time, he gets out. He doesn’t get the coin. He approaches the coach and asks,

Will there be a coin tomorrow too?

The coach realizes that the child is now genuinely motivated to protect the wicket.

The coach tells him,

Now, go home and be happy. Come back tomorrow. I’ll have a coin for you again.

In this way, the child continues to guard the wicket throughout the day and earns 13 coins from the coach.

This 11-year-old child was none other than Sachin Tendulkar, who later became a revered global cricketer and one of India’s greatest batsmen. The Indian people today revere him almost as a deity, and he even has the honorary title ‘God of Cricket.’

Similarly, his coach, Ramakant Achrekar, is considered the ‘Dronacharya‘ of Indian cricket. Even today, Sachin keeps those 13 coins he received from his first coach with great care, and he says that these coins are more valuable to him than an Olympic medal.

වයස අවුරුදු 11ක කුඩා දරුවෙක් කඩදාසි කොල බෝලයක් හදාගෙන කොස්සෙන් පහර දෙමින් ගෙදර වැඩකරන ආයාම්මා එක්ක ක්‍රිකට් ක්‍රීඩා කරනවා. මේ කුඩා දරුවගෙ ක්‍රිකට් වලට තියෙන ආසාව නිසාම ඔහුගෙ වැඩිමහලු සොහොයුරා ඔහුව ක්‍රිකට් ඉගෙන ගන්න රාමකාන්ත් අච්‍රේකාර් (Ramakant Achrekar) ගුරුවරයා වෙත බාර දෙනවා.

ඔහු නැවත වතාවක් මේ කුඩා දරුවට පිතිකරණය කියල දෙන්න පටන් ගන්නවා.එහෙත් දිගින් දිගටම ඔහු පුහුණුවීම් වලදි කඩුල්ල රැකගන්න අසමත් වෙනවා.

පුහුණුකරු අලුත් ක්‍රමයක් කල්පනා කරනවා මේ දරුවට කඩුල්ල රැකගෙන පන්දුවට පහර දෙනහැටි උගන්වන්න. ඔහු කඩුල්ලෙ බේල්ස් ඉවත් කරල ඒ වෙනුවට රුපියලේ කසියක් තියනවා. මේ කුඩා දරුවට කතා කරල කියනවා

ඔයා අද අවුට් වෙන්නේ නැතුව විකට් එකේ හිටියොත්, මේ කසිය ඔයාට දෙනවා. ඔයා අවුට් උනොත් මේ කාසිය පන්දු යවපු කෙනාට දෙනවා
